Salt Mines of Maras and Moray to Machu Picchu 2 Day

Your journey begins with pick-up from your hotel in Cusco or the Sacred Valley, as we travel through scenic Andean landscapes towards one of the most fascinating Inca sites: Moray, also known as the “Greenhouses of the Incas.” This unique archaeological site features a series of circular terraces built into a natural depression, each level with its own microclimate. The Incas are believed to have used this site to experiment with crop conditions and agricultural techniques.

Our adventure continues to the charming colonial town of Maras, where we visit the famous Salt Mines of Maras (Salineras). These ancient salt pans have been used for salt extraction since pre-Inca times. A naturally salty stream flows from a nearby spring and fills thousands of shallow pools, where the water evaporates, leaving behind crystallized pink salt a technique still in use today.

We then head to the historic village of Ollantaytambo, known for its impressive Inca fortress and cobblestone streets. Explore this living Inca town and its remarkable stone terraces and temples with your expert guide.

In the afternoon, board the train to Aguas Calientes, the gateway to Machu Picchu. Upon arrival, a hotel representative will meet you at the station and accompany you to your hotel for an overnight stay, preparing you for the magical experience awaiting on day two.

The most anticipated moment of your journey begins early, as we take the 5:30 a.m. bus to Machu Picchu, the legendary Lost City of the Incas. Upon arrival, enjoy a guided tour of Machu Picchu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Explore every corner of this incredible citadel, from ceremonial temples to agricultural terraces and sacred fountains.

Your expert guide will lead you through the main sectors of Machu Picchu, sharing fascinating insights about its history, architecture, and spiritual significance. After the guided tour, take time to explore the site on your own—wander along ancient stone pathways, admire panoramic views, or simply sit and absorb the mystical energy of the Andes.

For those seeking more adventure, optional hikes are available (not included in the tour price):

• Huayna Picchu Mountain, the iconic peak behind the citadel, offers breathtaking views.

• Sun Gate (Inti Punku), the original Inca entrance to Machu Picchu with spectacular overlooks.

• Or visit the local museum or hot springs in Aguas Calientes.

After descending back to Aguas Calientes, enjoy free time before boarding the train at 4:22 p.m. to return to Ollantaytambo, where our team will be waiting to drive you back to your hotel in Cusco.
