Trek to Choquequirao, the sister city of Machu Picchu, on an 8-day Andean adventure.

Cusco-Cachora-Capuliyoc-Chiquisca-Playa Rosalina-Marampata-Choquequirao-Rio Blanco-Maizal-San Juan Pass-Yanama Pass-Totora-Collpapampa-Lucmabamba-LLactapata-Hidroeléctrica-Agusas Calientes-Machu Picchu- return Cusco

The Choquequirao to Machu Picchu Trek is one of the most epic and rewarding hiking experiences in the Cusco region. This challenging 8-day adventure takes you through remote Andean valleys, cloud forests, and breathtaking high-mountain passes, offering a unique combination of stunning landscapes, rich biodiversity, and fascinating Inca history.

Perched at over 3,030 meters (9,940 ft) above sea level in the Salkantay mountain range, the ancient city of Choquequirao is often referred to as “the last refuge of the Inca Empire.” Surrounded by sacred mountains (Apus) such as Yamana, Ampay, Chokecarpu, Pumasiyo, and Panta, this site sits above the roaring Apurímac River and remains largely untouched by mass tourism.

During the Inca period, Choquequirao and Machu Picchu were linked by an extensive network of trails that formed part of the great Qhapaq Ñan (Inca Trail system). These sacred routes were used for religious pilgrimages and rituals to honor the mountains and natural forces of the Andes  especially the revered Salkantay peak.

As you hike through this forgotten route, you’ll uncover hidden temples, ceremonial plazas, agricultural terraces, and sophisticated hydraulic systems that show striking similarities to those at Machu Picchu. The Yanama Pass, the highest point of the trek, offers jaw-dropping panoramic views of glaciers and alpine landscapes.

This remote trek is ideal for experienced hikers looking for a once-in-a-lifetime journey through authentic Inca territory  far from the crowds of the Classic Inca Trail, yet equally rich in culture, mystery, and natural beauty.
