Embark on the Salkantay Trek – a breathtaking adventure through Peru’s stunning Andes, leading to the majestic Machu Picchu.
This 5-day hike features dramatic landscapes, including snow-capped peaks, lush cloud forests, and the stunning turquoise waters of Humantay Lake. Recognized as one of the most beautiful alternative treks to Machu Picchu, it offers a unique and less crowded route compared to the classic Inca Trail.
You’ll cross the highest point of the Vilcabamba mountain range at Salkantay Pass (4,650 m / 15,255 ft), and continue on to the Inca archaeological site of Llactapata – where you’ll enjoy your first glimpse of Machu Picchu from a unique perspective.
Finally, descend to the town of Aguas Calientes, the gateway to the Machu Picchu Historic Sanctuary. This once-in-a-lifetime journey immerses you in Peru’s rich natural beauty, culture, and ancient history.
Day 1: CUSCO – MOLLEPATA – CHALLACANCHA – SORAYPAMPA – LAGUNA HUMANTAY - LODGE DEL CIELO
Begin your journey with a visit to the Tarawasi archaeological site. Trek to Soraypampa with a stop at Humantay Lake, an acclimatization day. Overnight at Lodge del Cielo, enjoying panoramic views of the Humantay Lake glacier.
Day 2: SORAYPAMPA – PASO SALKANTAY – WAYRACMACHAY – CHAULLAY
Trek to Salkantay Pass, crossing the White River Valley and surrounding Humantay Peak. Descend through Wayracmachay to Chaullay. Overnight at the Lodge del Cielo.
Day 3: CHAULLAY – LA PLAYA – LUCMABAMBA – COCALMAYO - LODGE DEL CIELO
Hike through avocado orchards to Lucmabamba and then Cocalmayo. Continue to Aguas Calientes via hydroelectric station. Overnight at Lodge del Cielo.
Day 4: LUCMABAMBA – LLACTAPATA – AGUAS CALIENTES
Ascend to Llactapata Pass for a unique view of Machu Picchu. Descend to Aguas Calientes, ending the day with dinner and a briefing for the Machu Picchu visit.
Day 5: Visiting Machu Picchu Sanctuary
Take an early bus to Machu Picchu for a guided tour. Explore the city between 6 am and 7 am, followed by a visit to The Guardian House and time to explore independently.

Additional entrance fees (Huayna Picchu – Machu Picchu Mountain). Both mountains are quite high but have very different characteristics. Huayna Picchu reaches 2,720 m / 8,924 ft, but has an almost vertical ascent with much more extreme and narrow paths. On the other hand, Machu Picchu Mountain reaches 3,000 m / 9,843 ft, nearly 650 meters above the citadel. The path to the top of this mountain is less demanding than Huayna Picchu, has a wider trail, and can be done by anyone. However, caution is needed due to altitude sickness and weather conditions.

Option: If you feel tired after the Day 2 hike, you have the option to take a train from Hydroelectric to Aguas Calientes.

1. Humantay Lake:
Begin your adventure with a visit to the mystical Humantay Lake. 2. Salkantay Pass:
Cross the famous Salkantay Pass (4,638 meters/15,213 feet), the highest point of the trek. Here, you’ll be surrounded by the glaciated peaks of the Vilcabamba Range. The panoramic views from the pass are truly awe-inspiring, with snow-capped mountains stretching as far as the eye can see. It’s a challenging but rewarding climb, and a chance to connect deeply with the natural world.
3. Wayracmachay and Collpapampa:
Descend into the lush, subtropical zone as you make your way to Wayracmachay and Collpapampa. These stops provide a glimpse into the rich biodiversity of the region, with unique flora and fauna. The vegetation changes dramatically, from high-altitude grasses and shrubs to lush rainforest, making the trek a visual and ecological journey.
4. Lucmabamba and Cocalmayo:
Explore Lucmabamba, a hidden gem where you can interact with local communities and learn about their way of life. The area is known for its coffee and tea plantations, offering a taste of the Andean way of life. After hiking through diverse terrain, arrive at the hot springs of Cocalmayo, a relaxing spot to unwind after a long day on the trail.
5. Machu Picchu:
Conclude your trek with a visit to the majestic Machu Picchu.
